Motor vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of injury and death for infants, children, and teenagers. The good news is that proper use of car seats, booster seats, and seat belts greatly reduces the risk of serious injury. Below is important information to help you choose and use the safest option for your child.
Car Seat Safety Basics
There is no single “best” or “safest” car seat. The safest car seat is the one that:
- Fits your child’s age, height, and weight
- Is installed correctly in your vehicle
- Is used properly on every trip, no matter how short
All car seats sold in the United States must meet federal safety standards. For maximum protection:
- Always place car seats in the back seat
- Secure the car seat tightly to the vehicle
- Buckle your child snugly into the seat every time you drive
Types of Car Seats
Rear-Facing Car Seats
- Designed for infants and young toddlers (at minimum, through age 2)
- Must only be used facing the rear of the vehicle
Convertible Car Seats
- Can be used rear-facing or forward-facing
- Height and weight limits depend on how the seat is positioned – please see manufacturer instructions
- Don’t forget to keep the manufacturer information so you remember when it’s time to switch to the next stage!
Forward-Facing Car Seats
- For toddlers and children who are old enough and large enough to face forward (after age 2 at the earliest)
3-in-1 Car Seats
- Can be used as rear-facing, forward-facing, or a booster seat
- Adjusts as your child grows
Booster Seats
- For school-aged children
- Helps the seat belt fit properly across your child’s chest and hips for better protection
Helpful Features to Look For
- Multiple harness height positions
- Adjustable buckles
- Angle indicators to ensure proper head and neck positioning

Regulations & Recommendations
Car seat guidelines are based on your child’s age, height, weight, and the specific seat being used. Always keep your car seat instruction manual for reference and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations carefully.
Infants and Toddlers
- Use a rear-facing car seat until at least 2 years of age, or until your child reaches the maximum height or weight allowed by the car seat.
Toddlers and Preschool-Aged Children
- Use a forward-facing or convertible car seat until your child outgrows the seat’s height or weight limits.
School-Aged Children
- Use a booster seat until your child is about 4 feet 9 inches tall and between 8–12 years of age.
- Children 12 years and younger should always ride in the back seat.
Teenagers
- Children 13 years and older may ride in the front seat, according to American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines.
Take-Home
Correct installation and consistent use of car seats saves lives.
Your child’s age, height, and weight determine the safest way for them to ride in a vehicle. Since all car seats sold in the U.S. meet safety standards, the best choice is the one that fits your child, works with your vehicle, and is used correctly every time.
