Medical Ear Piercing

Medical Ear Piercing at

Holliston Pediatric Group

Our highly skilled clinical staff is available to make ear piercing as easy and convenient as possible with in-office visits!  To schedule your child’s ear piercing, call the office at 508-478-5006.

To be eligible for piercing, your child must be a patient in our practice, at least 2 months of age and up to date on vaccines.

We use the Blomdahl Medical Ear Piercing System. This system, which is only available to physicians, provides your child with a safer and more sanitary alternative to local retail stores.

Blomdahl is a sterile system where a disposable cartridge is replaced with every ear piercing. Holliston Pediatric Group uses a medical-grade titanium piercing stud to reduce the chance of an allergic reaction and infection.

FAQ about ear piercing:

Do I need to be a patient at Holliston Pediatric Group to have my child’s ears pierced?

At this time, we only offer ear piercing to active patients in our practice.

At what age can piercing be done?

The earliest we will pierce ears is after the first set of immunizations have been administered at the two-month visit.

How much does it cost?

We charge $100 for the piercing

Will my insurance cover ear piercing?

Insurance plans do not cover ear piercings. We require payment in full on the date of service.

I’m worried about placement, how do you make sure the earrings are even?

We use a surgical nontoxic pen that leaves a purple dot on the ear.  Once the dots have been placed, parents are given the opportunity to judge the location and changes are made if needed.

How soon can I change the earring after they are put in?

After piercing, the earrings may be changed after six weeks, at which time they must be replaced immediately or the piercing hole could close. An earring must be in the pierced ear at all times until the piercing has fully healed. Piercings are fully healed between 3 to 6 months after piercing, depending on the person.

How do I care for my child’s ears afterward?

After piercing you must clean the earlobe with soap and water twice daily, or with sterile saline. Always use clean hands to touch ears and earrings. You will be provided detailed aftercare instructions that we recommend you follow.  Read more about aftercare on Blomdahl’s website.

What are the risks of ear piercing?

Infection is a risk with any procedure. We make sure everything is sterile and as long as you cleanse appropriately, this shouldn’t be an issue. If there is any soreness, redness, or discharge at the site of piercing, see your doctor within 24 hours.

Can I get ear piercing done at my child’s well or sick visit?

Ear piercings are only done during visits solely dedicated to the medical ear piercing procedure. We do not “add-on” ear piercing to other sick or well visits. This allows enough time to perform the procedure and explain and answer questions about the aftercare. Please call the office to schedule an ear piercing appointment.

Do you offer ear piercing of any other part of the ear?

No, we only pierce the earlobe.
